The notion of corporate responsibility to the wider community is not a new, but following recent corporate scandals, such is increasingly discussed and debated. We deplore conduct that is counter to accepted international business standards.
The world accounting standards are increasingly converging, and as a Company registered in England and Wales our accounting practises conform to the GAAP standards, and since 2007, Korean company accounting has adopted the International Financial Reporting Standards.
We are mindful that part of our business is involved in travel, and it is inescapably true that the travel industry is an increasing contributor to global greenhouse gasses and consequently global warming. Nevertheless, it is also inescapably true that the benefits of travel and the resulting human interaction are incalculable both economically geo-politically and in breaking down social and cultural barriers.
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness" - Mark Twain
As with much else, the answers to sustainable tourist and business travel and development are complex and multi-faceted. We do support actions by the industry to reduce and or offset green house gas emissions and we encourage our members to seek to offset their carbon footprint. [Please see Afterabc Green Action]. We do not believe it is contradictory to also state that the benefits of travel are so fundamental to global prosperity that it is essential that travel be actively promoted and encouraged. A growth in international travel and trade is essential for many of the communities most dangerously challenged by Global warming. The introduction of foreign capital generated by the tourist industries does much to alleviate poverty and promote development.
All parties, Inter-governmental, national governments, private business, pressure groups and the travelling public are increasingly working together towards sustainable growth. The steps taken by Governments in creating a framework for reduced emissions and industry response is, whilst not enough, encouraging. The steps taken by business community in general, whilst not enough, are encouraging.
Afterabc is committed to play its role in creating a forum for information, debate and action to help increase sustainable international travel.
