Our "partner" European countries.

January 25, 2010 | Article Posted By - Claudia Everet, London

We are spoilt, us complaining Brits, complaining of the weather, complaining of the time it takes to commute to work, complaining about our foolish politicians and indeed complaining about our National Health Service.  I understand now in our great Euro Zone of uniformity that we are all one family, a great harmony of co-operation, - no need to fill in forms if you are ill, just do as you do in this country, pitch up to the doctor, pitch up to the hospital and all will be well.

Our good friends and wonderful European neighbours the Greeks seem to have forgotten about that little bit of the legislation; Greece has much to offer, health care to its visitors sadly is not part of the package.

greece.jpgOn a trip not so long ago I had the misfortune to be knocked off my feet by one of the young Greek mopedians, a polite and friendly guy who couldn't have been more apologetic, he was concerned that the thumb on my left hand was pointing towards my elbow, and the trickle of blood from my ear I think concerned him even more, (me too). Safe in the knowledge that we are all one Europe now I popped off to the nearest hospital: - bills for the stitches, - bills for x-rays and bills for the plaster caste and a bill for the consultation, (I have no English lady, you have money, yes?) and no rebate for the nine hour wait.

Forgive me, for I am little disillusioned with the notion of European 'partnership', perhaps dear old Blighty really does have a few plus points,  by the by,  the thumb is doing well, bruised bottom not a sign.......
